Penton Wireless Developers' Show Moves to San Diego

By Margo McCall -- Tradeshow Week, 2/9/2004

The Wireless Systems Design Conference & Expo is moving south. After 10 years at the San Jose Convention Center, the Penton Media event is relocating to the San Diego Convention Center.

But not just the location will be different about the March 8-10 event. The wireless developers' gathering will be the first managed by Radius Events, which last month won an outsourcing contract to produce Penton's technology shows.

The change is expected to be transparent to the show's 100 exhibitors and 4,000 or so attendees, since Radius Events is comprised of Penton's former technology-show team working out of the same Darien, Conn. office.

Besides the wireless developers' show, Radius has signed on to manage the Nanobusiness Conference May 17-19 at New York's Marriott Financial Center; SMART Mfg. June 13-15 at Orlando's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa; The Emerging Technologies Conference at MIT Sept. 29-30 in Cambridge, Mass.; and the Business Performance Management Summit Oct. 19-20 at the Marriott Financial Center.

Radius was founded by tradeshow veteran Carl Pugh, who as head of Penton's technology-show division managed such formerly fast-growing shows as Internet World.

Martha Dennis, president of the San Diego Telecom Council, said locating the show there makes sense, since the San Diego area, nicknamed Wireless Valley, is home to 100 wireless companies and 39,000 telecom employees.

Technologists from two Southern California wireless chipmakers will deliver keynotes. Ronald Reedy is founder, vice president and CTO of San Diego-based Peregrine Semiconductor. Henry Samueli is co-founder, chairman and CTO of Broadcom, which is headquartered in neighboring Orange County.

The event is being collocated with the Industrial Wireless Application Summit. A section of the show floor has been set aside for military electronics firms.

More than 60 technical papers will be presented during 11 conference tracks and two workshops.

Penton's Wireless Systems Design and Microwaves & RF magazines are among the media sponsors.
