IAAM Plans August Venue Safety and Security Academy
By Staff -- Tradeshow Week, 2/23/2004
Does the industry need another security event? Yes, according to the Intl. Assn. of Assembly Managers' Executive Director Dexter King.
In cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security, IAAM is launching the Academy for Venue Safety & Security Aug. 22-26 at the American Airlines Training & Conference Center in Dallas. King said the academy will distinguish itself from all the other safety and security events out there by offering in-depth courses on complex issues, such as ingress and egress of building visitors, security at loading docks, communications, disaster preparedness, insurance and licensing.
King also claimed there was demand for the event, discovered following an IAAM poll in which the membership voiced a need for more guidance and support in matters of legislation and risk management. "We have to be proactive to mitigate exposure and protect investment. We can't rely on the government to do it," King said.
The Academy is for public facility managers and private companies that are charged with preparing for and handling security, emergencies, crowds and life safety. IAAM hopes for as many as 350 students some day, but King expects an initial class of about 50. The Academy does not replace IAAM's Intl. Crowd Management Conference.
Details such as registration fees and class schedules have yet to be announced.
