Readers Speak: Who's the Best Indie Around?
Gary Tufel -- Tradeshow Week, 3/26/2007
In the world of show management, an entrepreneur has many avenues of entry.
No matter what their style or how they got into the industry, certain entrepreneurs stand out for their business acumen, strategic perspicacity and extraordinary execution.
Contributing Editor Gary Tufel asked two well-established stars of the indie scene who we should watch for.
Who are the independent show managers to keep an eye on these days, and why?
"I am especially intrigued by groups that demonstrate either entrepreneurial or innovative skills, which are often related. These groups display an impressive combination of both productive and creative use of technology. Companies that focus on developing such a culture include pulvermedia (run by Jeff Pulver), JD Events (run by Joel Davis), Brand Events (run by Chris Hughes in the U.K.), and Natl. Trade Productions (run by Bob Harar).
"Another commonality is that each of these groups is run by a strong, creative individual who understands events but is willing to take risks to redefine what makes a successful show or conference. Each becomes integral, and then a leader in the industry."
Margaret Pederson, President, exhibitions, Penton Media
"JD Events is certainly one to watch. They have a unique formula for success. Joel Davis has a very successful track record in building very strong brands, as well as taking some of his events into global markets.
"This is a unique industry where thought leaders like Mike Hough, Jim Bracken, Patrick McGovern and many others are always available for advice and guidance."
Philip McKay, President and CEO, PPM Media
