Gaylord Entertainment has released details of its plans for a 2 million square foot convention center and resort that the company proposes to build on the Chula Vista (Calif.) bay front.
The plans, unveiled during two Chula Vista City Council meetings, include 400,000 sq. ft. of exhibit and meeting space and a 1,500-room hotel, and were presented by Bennett Westbrook, senior vice president of design and construction, according to Brian Abrahamson, a company spokesman.
"The project is in the proposal stage because we are in negotiations with the port and the city," Abrahamson added.
The resort includes several other amenities:
- six restaurants
- entertainment/nightclub atop the hotel tower
- 8,000 sq. ft. of retail space
- swimming pools
The project is expected to cost $850 million to $875 million and have an economic impact of $1.2 billion during the development and construction phase by creating 12,900 construction and support jobs with a $463 million payroll.
Once construction is completed in 2010, the estimated economic impact annually will be $353 million with 3,100 jobs created and at least 1 million visitors per year.
Other Gaylord convention and resort properties include: Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, Tenn.; Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.; Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas; and Gaylord Natl. Resort & Convention Center in Prince George's County, Md.
