Green Bits and Pieces

-- Tradeshow Week, 4/21/2008

Heightened awareness of our planet in peril is not only making show organizers, venues, contractors and exhibitors more green-conscious, but also it's bringing greener and more eco-friendly products to the tradeshow floor. Here's a sampling of a few of them:

Banner Stand Is Another Use for Bamboo

Drytac's Panda Stand is an earth-friendly alternative to conventional displays. The environmentally friendly retractable banner stand for the exhibit, display and graphics markets is primarily constructed of bamboo. The Panda Stand is made from 90-percent renewable resources and can be used for displays at tradeshows, public events, retail outlets, lobbies, gaming facilities, sports venues or any other display environment.

The Panda Stand is easy to set up and can be transported by one person.

According to Drytac, bamboo is a viable replacement for wood and provides a critical component in the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The display unit's base housing, support pole and top rail components are made from bamboo.

Eco-friendly Promotional Products

On Sale Promos has introduced 50 eco-friendly promotional products and corporate gifts to its product line made from recycled, organic and/or fair-trade materials. Its green promotional products include clothing made from organic cotton, bags and totes produced from recycled fabric or leather, and fair-trade foods.

Companies that support a mission to restrict the resources taken from the land, as well as the pollution put into it, need eco-friendly products, said Tom McDougall, On Sale Promos sales account manager. On Sale found a niche in connecting vendors who make green products with customers, he added.

On Sale Promos client The JBG Companies, a Washington, D.C.-based real estate development firm, was one of the first to purchase green products from the company. Matthew Blocher, senior vice president of JBG, said concern for the environment needed to infiltrate all aspects of the business, including marketing, in order to maintain continuity with sustainable building materials and architectural plans.

Wearing a Green Badge

Registration Control Systems' RCS Green Badge doesn't require a plastic holder; it uses an RCS reusable metal clip instead. RCS was looking for a green option to take the place of plastic, oil-based badge holders, said Dan ZumTobel, RCS vice president of sales and marketing

The recycled paper badge stock contains 100-percent post-consumer fibers, is acid-free, FSC-certified, certified process chlorine-free and made with 100-percent clean energy. And the badges are less expensive than standard plastic badge holders.

Bamboo Booth Is Eco-friendly

Green Events Source chose Whitney Wood Works, a green cabinetmaker and woodworking company, to manufacture The Bambooth, an eco-friendly display system that launched at Exhibitor this year. Whitney Wood Works specializes in non-toxic, earth-friendly cabinetry and woodworking for both residential and commercial clients.

Green Events Source chose Whitney Wood Works because of the company's track record as a sustainable manufacturer, said Deborah Popely, Green Events Source founder and president. Their involvement ensured The Bambooth was green from design through execution, she added.

The Bambooth, designed by Lisa and Ron Elkins, LEED-accredited architects and principals of the Chicago-based architecture/design firm 2Point Perspective, is constructed of renewable bamboo and recycled metal. It can be personalized with eco-friendly banners and high-recycled content eco-resin panels in many colors and textures.

The Bambooth is the first product of its kind from Green Events Source, which publishes The Green Events Source Book and provides other resources for green meetings, tradeshows and special events.

The Green Events Source Book is a multimedia resource that covers the many ways event organizers can reduce the environmental impact of their events while also highlighting hotels, convention centers, event management companies, display designers and manufacturers, printers, shippers and other vendors who offer sustainable products and services.
