New Flower Show Sprouts in Sacramento

The Golden State isn't just the home of the entertainment industry and the Golden Bears.
Starting next year, California also will be the home of a new flower and garden show, California State Flower & Garden Show, produced by Cal State Shows and scheduled April 8-11 at California Exposition & State Fair in Sacramento, Calif.
“Although other shows in Northern California have provided beautiful landscape displays, we've felt that they did not capture the diversity of the California gardening community,” said Sherry Larsen, show director and owner of Cal State Shows. “Our goal is to bring together a broader segment of gardeners and landscapers to share their common interests and ideas.”
The show is being sponsored by the California Garden Clubs, a statewide federation of garden clubs and plant societies.
An advisory committee of statewide horticultural professionals currently is being formed, according to show officials, for the show that will feature plants, techniques and products of the state's different climates.
It will include more than 26,000 square feet of gardens and displays, horticulture competitions and seminars and workshops, show officials said.
“This show will be the flower and garden equivalent of the state fair,” Larsen added.
Cal State Shows also produces the semiannual California State Home & Garden Show at the Sacramento Convention Center.
“Producing a show of this magnitude is the culmination of years of hard work and the experience we have gained from our home and garden shows,” Larsen said. “We're proud to serve the needs of California's gardeners and those who supply and inspire them.”
Another flower show serving the area, the annual San Francisco Flower & Garden Show, held at the San Mateo County Event Center in San Mateo, Calif., was threatened with its demise this year.
At press time, owner Duane Kelly, chairman of Seattle-based Salmon Bay Events, said he was negotiating a deal for the sale of the show and another that he owns, the Northwest Flower & Garden Show.
