Is Interesting Content Better than Quality Content?

August 9, 2009

I returned last week from the experient e4 customer conference and did something that I have never done ever before in front of an audience. I sang. Yep, you heard it right – I sang.

Now for those of you that know me, you realize that this task is beyond my skill set. I have never even hummed before an audience – ever. I will be the first to tell you that a couple of voice lessons could not have hurt.

Why? Well it was somewhat of an experiment. First, I did have a pretty funny message about social media. Second, I wanted to measure the power of video. From the initial results, it appears that our industry is starved for interesting video content.

This observation matches my experience. I haven’t really seen anything lately that is earth shattering, grabs attention or creates a memorable impression.

But here is the dilemma.  By posting this video on YouTube and obtaining over 300 views in three days, are we proving that interesting content is found to be better than quality content?

You can decide for yourself.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeN_gkkU2KU

Ignore the first 1 minute 23 seconds of humorous background slides that can’t be seen in the video. Jump to the ‘story and song’ and judge for yourself – I suspect you will find the singing flawed, the approach different and the results?

One other note – I have had 2 more requests to repeat the same performance in other speaking engagements. I guess ‘America’s Got Talent or Not’ just came to the Events and Exhibitions industry.

Now where is that telephone number for the voice instructor...

I think it depends on context- for example, I would rather have a "Quality" meatloaf than an "interesting" one, but then I would rather go to an "Interesting" Play than a "Quality" one (Though in that regard they might be the same)

Love that you took a risk and it paid off for you. Now, you were all burners on and triumphed in a completely unique way. If everyone starts singing you might have to breakdance next time.

I say go for it, accept.

If anybody criticizes the video you can always tell the "I Nold you is wasn't all that great?. You can, however, take pride in having stepped outside the box to do something different. I can't imagine it will tarnish your image at all. In fact, you will likely get considerable inexpensive publicity for your cause. If singing adds to the objective of your speeches, and is requested by your clients, what do you have to lose?

Go for it.

I think its great to every now and then do something out of the ordinary and push ourselves out of our habitts. Good for you!

Agree with Veronica it depends on the context.

Sometimes if it is not interesting it might not get the attention needed so it can show its quality.

Pretty remarkable;-) In fact the first thing that came to my mind on reading about your gig was Seth Godin's blog post titled "How to be remarkable". Perhaps you had though of that. If not, it is well worth a second read. Chuck and Veronica are spot on.

Stephen,

Style always overwhelms sustance (sadly), so the trick move is to make sure that you connect the two.

Even if you may not be the greatest singer in your view, people read authenticity into a 'stunt' like the one you did - and there's nothing that people like more than to see something of the real person behind the professional.

The trick move is to make sure that some time after the event people say things like "Do you remember that guy - he sang an aria...... and he did some amazing work with us - strangely the aria became connected with the serious work we did that followed - in short Stephen is both intelligent AND engaging"

All power to your elbow / vocal chords!

I think that it bodes well to have a mixture to keep things fresh and the audience engaged - but certainly the reason that certain confernces/trade shows are thriving and others are headed south is due directly to offering an education and nuggets of information that the attendee can use and potentially help their companies ride out these tough economic times .

An aria huh ? good for you ! I'd need to be talked off the ledge.

Best of Luck

Speak on! And everyone should watch the full clip.

Never try to baffle them with BS - you will be found out and your credibility unrecoverably destroyed. This is not to say, sometimes you may have to dance abit.

Quality trumps interesting but relevance is king.

Interesting makes quality, I believe. Some of the most interesting artists weren't the best quality-wise. Plus you're not presenting yourself as a singer, but a speaker...right?

Cheryl,
I think I will have better acceptance as a speaker over a singer. My six year old has more artistic talent than I.

An interesting content can definitely grab the attention. But what brings the clap at the end of the day is quality. There is no harm in having something interesting (like what you did) to make a good quality point. But eventually, the content has to be of good quality.

By the way, enjoyed your video. :)

Thanks,

Good on you for stepping out of your comfort zone. I'm totally impressed and if something is catchy people will generally remember it. If one thing that you 'sang' stuck in people's minds does it matter if it was quality singing, no, it matters that you did something different that connected in people's minds and therefore its a winning formula. Should you take more singing assignments..... with a few lessons and some funny lyrics absolutely, but remember part of the charm may be that you are not a perfect vocalist....
Good luck whatever route you take!
