Are we over social media?December 28, 2009As I jumped into several LinkedIn communities this morning, I was amazed to see how very little hype was being promoted on social media. It seemed like most of the discussions and comments involved 'doing business'. In the past, it seemed that every other post was 'social media this...or social media that'. It seemed rather refreshing that the discussion of social media as the cure for all woes was NOT the focus of the conversations. Maybe it is just my perception that the conversations were less about the value of social media and more about how we can execute various marketing tools, social media included, that will benefit our tradeshow industry and are customers. This is quite a startling observation coming from me. I tend to consider myself very involved in social media consutling. However, if we are truly over social media, it means that we consider it just another tool in the traditional marketing mix. This is good news and now we can get down to the business of conducting show business. In response to: Are we over social media? Dorian Smith commented: I think social media is useful for some industries or segments of an industry...but not for everything. I also think that much like other trends, some companies use a "throw mud against the wall and hope something will stick" mentality. Rather than verifying that their target demographic uses a certain medium, they just jump in because other people around them suggest it. Social media isn't over, it's just that all the early adopters & trend followers who had no business using it have finally realized that they actually need to identify their demographic and where that demographic spends their time. It's not a fun process, but it's something that successful marketers need to do.

In response to: Are we over social media? Rennette Grace commented: Stephen, I can certainly understand your reasoning for raising this question. I'm not even sure I had heard the term "social media" prior to 2009, but it surely has been discussed in every single group I belong to. Like you, I'm looking forward to getting back to discussing business and not Twitter, et al.
