Recently, I have noticed a lot of interesting definitions about social media.  Some have been pretty catchy, some have been thought provoking and other have been...well, let's just say that many people still just don't get it.  Some recent examples include:

Social media is a strategy as part of the entire marketing mix.

Social media is a set of tools to get you there.

Social media is a commitment, not a campaign.

Social media is a fad.

Social media is NOT a fad.  There is a great video on YouTube to defend this statement.

...deliver actual, tangible results to businesses and individuals, if done with a purpose.  - Chris Brogan

...access to real time business intelligence.

...offers new opportunities to activate...brand enthusiasm.  - Stacy DeBroff founder and CEO of Mom Central

...amplifies impressions.

...is not a media.  - David Alson, Radian6

...a platform that helps get seen and is more easily shared.

...like teen sex; everyone wants to do it.  No one actually knows how.  When finally done, there is surprise it's not better.  "Web Analytics: An Hour A Day" author Avinash Kaushik

...a marketing and communications tool.

...cannot be monetized yet.

...takes patience and vision.
