Top Technologies for 2008: Dashboards
February 11, 2008

Dashboards for management information systems are an interface that organizes and summarizes information that is easy to understand and often allows executives to act upon. Unfortunately, the term has become vague from generalizations regarding any type of visual reporting tool. Dashboards can be customized to organization needs. The power of dashboards lie in the ability to obtain data from disparate sources, for example, data that might reside on a local computer, combined with calculations from several applications along with knowledge from remote sites on the web. The beauty of a dashboard lies in the ability to marry all this information in a summarized view.

The use and value of dashboards has generated some of the greatest reader participation with Event Tech blog. From observations to the limitations of dashboards to the acknowledgement of meeting industry suppliers that are delivering robust analytics, dashboards are changing the way we access and utilize supplier tools.

Some of the better dashboards relevant to the systems in our industry include the tools provided by a2zInc, allianceTech and asp. Each of these suppliers organizes and creates different types of dashboards that are very relevant to their customer needs. The secret to great dashboards is

  1. easy to read graphics or data
  2. extremely accurate analytics
  3. information relevant to customer decision points

Show management ability to control and utilize supplier solution is not becoming any easier with the advancement of new innovations. Suppliers must continue to address this challenge by harnessing the power of dashboards.

Stephen, great topic and overview! I think the other two major benefits that management receives from well constructed dashboard solutions are: 1) The ability to track and see trends that will impact results early enough to make mid-course adjustment and 2) The ability to drill down into the dashboard and get the detail behind the trends. Dashboards also seem to simplify the utilization for execs and allow an organization to better leverage the data that they are collecting from their events. As more folks embrace Software as a Service solutions, dashboards are really gaining lots of momentum as a tool to improve and report business results.

Dave, Thanks for the additional insight. Trends are a challenge. From my years in market research, I tend to question any predefined predictors and the true value they provide. How can you capture unexpected changes through established algorithms? Yet your observation is dead on. These tools do allow show organizers the chance to make better decisions with relevant analytics.
