There’s Nothing Like a Discount
May 7, 2009
Even if you’re not in danger of a layoff or a change in your economic status, a downturn leads to penny-pinching.
I’m always looking for a good deal. If I can forego a purchase for a bit while the price drops, I’ll do it. And, because of the economy, I’m finding the deals out there now are bigger and better.
With retailers around the country scrambling to lure customers with the promise of a discount, it’s no surprise that the convention and tradeshow industry also is looking for ways to ease strapped wallets.
I had an e-mail from the Intl. Assn. of Exhibitions and Events waiting for me yesterday morning when I turned on my computer.
Have you been interested in attending its Robert L. Krakoff Future Leaders Institute? If so, this is the year to go.
Normally $495 for an individual, IAEE cut the rate to attend this year’s institute to $249. Plus, if more than one person from your company wants to go, it’s a flat $495 for everyone.
“IAEE understands that the tough economy, reduced budgets and concerns about tomorrow are on your mind,” the e-mail read. “And, you know that successful organizations depend upon consistent, bold and creative leadership, and we are dependent upon employees who possess the right attitudes and skills. This is why we believe we have an obligation to help our future leaders secure the best training and preparation that we can provide to them.”
I’ve also received e-mails from associations offering scholarships to unemployed members, freezes on exhibit space rates and discounted registration.
The upside – for everyone, whether employed or not – is that they’re saving a few pennies. The bad news for associations is that members might just get used to the savings offered during the recession and protest when rates are raised once the storm’s over.
