A Good Travel Story
June 17, 2008
Yes, I know, this might be hard to believe: I actually have a good travel story to tell and, since they are so few and far between, please indulge me.
On Monday, I was heading back from Washington, D.C., where I had checked out the new Gaylord property in Natl. Harbor, Md., and slipped in a quick family visit. That’s when I met up with a massive set of thunderstorms that swept into the area right around the time my flight was supposed to take off.
Instead of flying out to celebrate my first wedding anniversary with my husband, I spent three hours on a plane, on the tarmac, as lighting crashed all around us. The pilot assured us a few times that we were perfectly safe.
Everyone kept calm, mainly for one reason – a flight attendant named Janie. She handed out bottles of water and what little food was available for a short flight to Cincinnati (I was catching a longer flight back from there to L.A.). She was cheery and polite, joking here and there, and keeping everyone calm in the meantime. The plane ended up having to taxi back to the terminal and, after another anxious few hours, we finally left for Cincinnati where there was only one flight left going to L.A. that night.
I told Janie it was my anniversary and asked if she thought I might make that flight. I couldn’t believe what she did next. She told the pilots about my hopes of making the flight, and they called the airport and asked them to let the L.A. flight know I was coming.
We arrived with literally minutes to spare, and, after a very mad dash and shuttle ride to another terminal, I made the other flight. More shockingly, so did my bag.
Once on that flight, a flight attendant there came up and handed me a plastic bag. I hadn’t eaten in hours by this point and inside was dinner. Janie had asked them to give me something to eat.
I finally got to L.A. before midnight, so it was technically still my anniversary. My husband met me there with a dozen roses and a sign welcoming me home. Thanks, Janie.
