A News Avalanche
April 25, 2008
At Tradeshow Week, our work week is essentially reversed. Instead of winding down on Friday afternoon, we are busy preparing to go to press on Monday and still going full steam ahead getting stories done while most people are drifting off to a relaxing weekend.
So, what usually happens is that on Tuesday morning we figure out what we are doing for the next issue and some time around Wednesday afternoon, Thursday morning, if lots of news hasn’t come in, a mild sense of panic starts to set in.
Are things happening we don’t know about? Or is it really just a slow news week? I will tell you from the experience of working for a few different news establishments now, this is something that happens at every one of them – a fear that somehow there won’t be enough news when it’s time to go to press or on the air.
This week is a great example of what happens quite often – the panic had started, we didn’t have anything great brewing for breaking news yet, or for the magazine either for that matter, and then suddenly a news avalanche hit us Wednesday morning and afternoon and into Thursday.
One story after another broke, from Freeman announcing numerous executive-level promotions and changes to long-suffering New York City getting some good news about more space on its West side for tradeshows to the surprise news that Trade Show Exhibitors Assn. President Stephen Schuldenfrei was retiring after three years heading the organization.
All of the news went online as it happened and will be in the pages of Tradeshow Week in the May 5 and 12 issues. And, as always, there’ll be plenty more to follow.
