TSW LAS VEGAS: THE INTERVIEW

The New Man at Mandalay Bay

Anyone who’s ever sat in on a Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority board of directors meeting knows who Chuck Bowling is. He’s the one always willing to throw out that question or comment that everyone else was thinking, but was too timid to bring up themselves. TSW Las Vegas Contributing Editor Lisa Plummer spoke recently with the 27-year industry veteran who is moving from a corporate position at MGM Mirage – executive vice president of sales, channel marketing and distribution – to be the executive vice president at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.

Question: How will this new position be different for you?
Answer:
Over the last several years, my goal has been to leverage (MGM Mirage) to our top travel partners in all market segments, including meetings and conventions, wholesale, Internet publishers and individual travelers. My new role … will not only involve marketing, but all operational aspects of the resort.

Q: It looks like this will be a difficult year for many businesses. How are the country’s economic problems going to impact the local convention and meetings business?
A:
There was great optimism going into ’08 but, now that we’re getting into the year, we’re seeing some corporate belt-tightening, some of that business starting to watch and revise their budgets. It’s going to be a difficult year, but we’re working with meeting planners to maximize their time while they’re (here).

Q: Some experts say that the larger tradeshows won’t be affected because they book so far in advance, but what about the smaller groups who could quickly make the decision to stay home for economic reasons?
A:
People are still going to need to be meeting. They may come with a smaller budget, but the value of hosting a meeting here is strong. We as a destination are stronger than others (because of) the total package of what the city offers, and we have an advantage over other destinations because of the ease of holding an event here.
