It was no surprise to see Professional Convention Management Assn. President and CEO Deborah Sexton at the podium of a press conference the second day of her organization's Annual Meeting, held Jan. 11-14 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.

Meetings Industry Takes It on the Chin
Before the subprime mortgage crisis ballooned and put a damper on the overall economy, Clark Franklin and his San Francisco-based independent meeting planning company Planned Advantage regularly worked on up to 25 meetings annually that ranged from 10 to 10,000 attendees. Then the bottom dropped out.

Taxes or Not? Gaylord Waits on Mesa Decision
Mesa, Ariz., residents will get to decide whether to let Gaylord Entertainment keep the bed taxes it generates at a proposed resort and convention center project to promote the property and the region itself – instead of passing them on to the Mesa Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Veterinarians Take Five
The American Veterinary Medical Assn. will move from a three-year to a five-year rotational pattern for its AVMA Annual Convention, beginning in 2015 and continuing through at least 2024. The event, which includes an exhibition, will be held in cities distributed geographically throughout the United States.
