Event CEOs: Look for Gloom, Doom
Bailouts, stimulus plans and positive thoughts notwithstanding, there are not very many show managers starting out this year with optimistic outlooks. According to the 2009 Exhibition and Conference Industry Outlook, 63 percent of event industry CEOs believe this year will be worse than 2008 when it comes to revenue growth.

Big Fish Slips Out of Atlanta’s Grasp
A debate playing out in the public arena because of the U.S. government bailout of troubled businesses has hit home in Atlanta. Primerica, a Citigroup financial services subsidiary based in Duluth, Ga., canceled its biennial convention scheduled June 17-20 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, citing cost-cutting measures.

Goodbye, Fossil Fuels Hello, the Alternative
The push to wean the United States of its dependence on foreign oil, coupled with the desire to create cleaner energy and curtail global warming, has created a gold rush for shows in the alternative and renewable energy sectors. In the past few years, shows such as Solar Power Intl. and Windpower have grown so quickly that they both have had to move to bigger venues this year.

Freeman Buys Audiovisual Company
Dallas-based Freeman acquired Arlington Heights, Ill.-based AVT Event Technologies, an in-house audiovisual provider to hotels.
