FMI Scraps Show, Blames Swine Flu
Just one day after Texas Gov. Rick Perry declared his state a disaster in an effort to release federal money to combat the swine flu outbreak, the Food Marketing Institute made a declaration of its own – by canceling its May 5-8 Marketechnics and Future Connect events, five days before they were to open at the Dallas Convention Center.

Q1 Earnings Have Few Bright Spots
In the past few weeks, there have been glimmers of hope that the economic downturn just might be bottoming out, if not showing some signs of recovery. And, if first-quarter earnings are any indication, there definitely are companies associated with the tradeshow industry that slowly seem to be showing positive growth too, though others have fallen even further behind.

Kids' Show Goes for Bluegrass
All Baby & Child will move its annual ABC Kids Expo from the Las Vegas Convention Center to the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky., in 2011 and 2012. The four-time TSW Fastest 50 winner, which ranks No. 63 on the 2009 TSW 200 and specializes in products for newborns to teens, has taken place at the LVCC since its launch in 2001.

Dallas (Finally) Will Get Anchor Hotel
It was a nail-biter to the end, but, by a mere 2-percentage-point margin, Dallas voters defeated a referendum that would have blocked the city from funding a long-awaited anchor hotel at the Dallas Convention Center. According to Phillip Jones, president and CEO of the Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau, Proposition 1 failed by 2,100 votes in a 51-to-49-percent majority.
