A Free Man in Vegas


Talk to Barry Rappaport, and you’ll figure out right away out he’s no rookie. Now Freeman’s executive vice president of sales and exposition services, Rappaport has been with the general contracting firm 25 years. He’s responsible for some of the biggest tradeshows in Las Vegas: World of Concrete, the Gourmet Housewares Show, SEMA Show. In 1992, since opening Freeman’s Las Vegas office during the company’s West Coast expansion, Rappaport said, he’s been happy to be a part of such a vibrant tradeshow market, which he considers the “key place to be” for an industry professional.

Question: How’s Freeman’s Las Vegas business?
Answer: It’s been good. We’ve had growth year after year (here), and it seems to be continuing. Las Vegas is a really hot market right now.

Q: Besides the Natl. Assn. of Broadcasters, have you gotten any new clients lately?
A: We used to do that show (NAB) for many years, but lost it when it left Las Vegas for Atlanta. GES picked it up when it came back, and we waited 11 or 12 years to have the opportunity to bid on it, so we’re excited about that. We also picked up the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Assn. of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and NPE (the Intl. Plastics Showcase) with the last six months.

Q: Why such a big run?
A: Our service levels have been an interest to customers. We’re changing from being a supplier/vendor to more of a partner with our customers, assisting them in branding their event and providing an improved attendee experience. That’s been exciting for us, because we’ve never had the knowledge to work with our customers in that fashion.
